Porto Sant’Elpidio represented the borgo marinaro.
The investiture manifestation of the Guardian of the Port, which takes place on the seafront in the first days of August, refers to the ancient union with the neighboring city of Sant'Elpidio a Mare, of which Porto Sant'Elpidio represented the seaside village.
Sant'Elpidio a Mare is the seat, on the second Sunday of August, of the longest-running historical re-enactment of the Marches: the Contesa del Secchio, a forerunner game of basketball, with a one-way roundabout between the districts of San Giovanni, Sant'Elpidio , San Martino and Santa Maria, which is commemorated every year on the second Sunday of August since 1953. The historical procession that precedes the race consists of over 1000 characters in splendid medieval costumes behind which there is an accurate historical research. The painters Carlo and Vittore Crivelli, to whom the city is linked, and other internationally renowned painters are a source of inspiration for the creation of costumes that allow the visitor to enjoy a faithful objectification of history.
There are many places rich in history and culture in Sant’Elpidio a Mare. In the historic center you can admire the Torre Gerosolimitana and visit the civic art gallery, which houses works by the Venetian master Vittore Crivelli as well as the Vincenzo Andolfi footwear museum.
